31.07.202620:26:43UTC+00TSX Falls as Mining and Tech Losses Weigh

The S&P/TSX Composite Index fell 0.8% on Friday to close at 35,226, weighed down by weakness in mining and technology stocks. Gold miners retreated as bullion prices slipped in response to a sharp rise in long-term U.S. Treasury yields, with Agnico Eagle dropping 3.6%, Barrick Gold losing 2.5%, and Wheaton Precious Metals (WPM) sliding 3.9%.

Technology names also lagged, led by Shopify, down 4.3%, and Celestica, off 6%, as investors adopted a more cautious stance ahead of Shopify’s second-quarter 2026 results due on August 5.

Among individual earnings moves, Fairfax Financial (-0.5%) and Cameco (-2.1%) both reported revenue ahead of expectations but missed consensus EPS estimates. Enbridge slipped 1.8% despite topping forecasts for adjusted second-quarter profit. Telus slumped 11.3% after posting a second-quarter loss and resetting its quarterly dividend.

In contrast, Imperial Oil gained 0.5% on stronger-than-expected earnings, while Alimentation Couche‑Tard (ATD) advanced 1.4% after unveiling plans to acquire Poland’s Żabka convenience store chain.
